June 28, 2008 - London Eye/British Museum
We were off and running quite early again today. After breakfast we were scheduled for a meeting with a retired Parliamentarian at an economics college. To get there, we had our first experience riding the London tubes. Those of you who know me, know my adversion and past experience with underground transportation. But today there were no misadventures. We actually rode it several times throughout the day. We found out how hectic and busy a Saturday night in London can be.
Our Parliamentarian was Nicholas Bennett, a retired MP from the House of Commons representing a district in Scotland. He was delightful and truly enjoyed interacting with the delegates. He compared and contrasted our governments, then allowed plenty of time for questions. I loved his sense of humor. He also had a profound respect for America. He spends some time here in Florida and has a sister who lives in Brooklyn.
We have been blessed with one of most beautiful days imaginable. The sun is shining and the skies are clear with a temp of about 72 degrees. Very un-London-like.
We had a box lunch on the grass before we rode the London Eye. We had all of the Ohio delegates and the Wisconsin delegates in our car. It takes a half hour to make a complete rotation and it provides a spectacular view of London.
The British Museum is huge, and it had so many wonderful artifacts from Egypt, Greece, and Rome. I think the high point of the museum was the Rosetta Stone. It was unbelieveable! I also spent some time taking pictures of artifacts to use in class.
We had dinner in Chinatown. I hadn't realized how much the Londoners love their Chinese food. We had a variety of Chinese dishes, and the delegates had the opportunity to use chopsticks. That was fun to watch!
I'm not sure how gas prices are at home, but here it is $12/gallon for diesel. I think they said it's $10/gallon for regular.
Tomorrow we're off to Nottingham!

Thanks for the update. We keep thinking about him and wondering "what is he doing now?" and "what time is it in Brian's world?" I'm sure the highlight of his trip was the British Museum and the Rosetta Stone and I'm so glad he got to see it. Thanks again for keeping us filled in on your activities.
